Memphis Animal Services, Fire Department team up to help lost pets

A new partnership between Memphis Animal Services and the Memphis Fire Department is working to ensure more missing pets find their way home.

The new Fire Finders program has put a microchip scanner in each of the 57 fire stations across the city of Memphis. Funded entirely through a Maddie’s Fund Innovation Grant, the goal of the program is to provide more resources to those who find missing pets and help those pets find their way home.

In collaboration with the Tennessee Fire Service Coalition, the 111th Tennessee General Assembly passed HB 316/SB 1442 on May 2, 2019. Gov. Bill Lee subsequently signed the legislation and on July 1, Public Chapter 490, Acts of 2019, became effective.

Voters go to polls in 5 municipal elections


Five cities held municipal elections at the end of August and through September, including general elections in three cities, a special run-off in one, and a primary election in another.
The municipalities of Arlington, Dickson, and Lexington held regular elections while Knoxville held its primary election that will narrow down the candidates for an upcoming November general election.
Nashville also held a run-off election after several positions from a previous general election in August remained open when no candidate garnered enough votes to be seated.

EPA repeals 2015 Clean Water WOTUS rule

On Sept. 12, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of the Army announced that the agencies are repealing a 2015 rule that impermissibly expanded the definition of “waters of the United States” (WOTUS) under the Clean Water Act.
The agencies are also recodifying the longstanding and familiar regulatory text that existed prior to the 2015 Rule—ending a regulatory patchwork that required implementing two competing Clean Water Act regulations, which has created regulatory uncertainty across the United States.

House elects new leadership in Special Session

It’s official. Cameron Sexton was elected by the members of the Tennessee House of Representatives to be the Speaker of the House, during a special called legislative session in August. Sexton was elected 94-0, with two democrats abstaining.
Sexton, 48, is currently serving his fifth term in the state House.
Last year, he was elected to the position of GOP Caucus Chair for the House Republicans. Rep. Jeremy Faison was elected by the GOP Caucus to fill that leadership position.

Memphis brings together public, private partners to tackle blight through the courts

To deal with the ongoing issues of blight in the community, the city of Memphis has partnered with Shelby County, the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, and several nonprofits and community-based organizations for a multi-faceted approach to blight removal through the court system.
