The City of Baxter, Tennessee has an opening for a Police Chief.  Salary/Pay Rate:  $50,000 - $62,000 depending on qualifications. The purpose of this job is to perform administrative, managerial, and technical functions associated with overseeing the activities of the Police Department and enforcing all city statues/ordinances and state laws/regulations for which the police department is accountable.  Duties and responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and directing all aspects of department operations; supervising the enforcement of laws/ordinances/responding to and directing major calls/occurrences; formulating orders/regulations; developing department budget and controlling expenditures; supervising assigned employees; and providing information and assistance to the general public.

The Police Chief is responsible for developing the annual budget proposal and monitoring expenditures, as well as fostering departmental relationships with other law enforcement agencies, city officials, community and groups and the general public with regard to law enforcement activities.

The Police Chief also serves on boards, committees and agencies relating to promoting crime prevention and improving law enforcement and serves on committees involving city programs and administration.

Qualified applicants should have a high school diploma, supplemented by formal training in law enforcement methods/practices with extensive experience in law enforcement work to include ten (10) years of management/supervisory experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  The qualified applicant must have Police officer certification by the State of Tennessee or be eligible for transition as described in Tennessee P.O.S.T. rules. Qualified candidates should be a legal resident of Tennessee with a valid TN driver’s license.
