Building Official/Planner

The City of Dayton will be accepting applications for a Building Official/Planner. 

Minimum qualifications include current certification as a Building Inspector in Tennessee (or achieve full certification in the State of Tennessee within six months of employment for all required certifications); High school diploma or equivalent and valid driver’s license.   Must possess a solid understanding of construction principles, zoning laws, and community development practices.  Position is also responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks to the City’s operations and assets.  Salary range $65,000.00 to $80,000.00 depending on experience and certifications.   

Must have the ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations and have knowledge of Federal Flood Plain Regulations, as well as State, City, and County building codes, including the International Building Code, International Residential Code and TOSHA/OSHA regulations. Possess understanding of all basic functions of construction.  Ability to read and interpret construction plans/specifications and enforce the active codes.  Applies rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially while maintaining satisfactory public relations through courteous, professional behavior and prompt attention to public complaints and requests.

Proficient in GIS and planning software applications.  Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.  Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Work is both indoors and outdoors and may include exposure to high places, fumes, chemicals, noise, and machinery with moving parts.  Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, walking, climbing, twisting, reaching and kneeling are required.  Will be required to climb ladders, enter crawlspaces, stand for extended periods and maintain visual acuity to detect small defects or structural issues.  May be required to lift objects weighing over 25 pounds.
